Seoul Tasty (Part I)

I know, I know.. I haven’t touched this site in over a year. What can I say.. Life got in the way. (Or maybe I’m just lazy :P)

As those of you who follow me on Instagram would know, I went to Seoul, Korea for a few days with my bestie. I ate a ton and took a billion photos (hence the spam on IG); but I feel bad so I’ve decided to take the visual purge elsewhere and revive this blog!

Without further ado, here is the foodporn:

Gimbap from a random small stall in the MTR station. These are available pretty much everywhere on the streets.
_1250704
Yukhoe – a traditional Korean dish made from seasoned raw beef, pear and egg yolk
_1260182
Ginseng chicken soup at Tosokchon. Apparently the best in Seoul – and indeed it was delicious. Word of advice: come early (11am ish) or be prepared to wait in line.
_1260197
The chicken was stuffed with glutinous rice, which absorbed all the flavors like a sponge. The meat was fall-off-the-bone tender and there was a generous amount of ginseng, dates, pepitas, etc.
_1260179
Also available with black chicken at a slightly higher price tag (28,000W)
_1250722
Deli Manjoo – essentially a cute corn-shaped cake that is filled with custard. Freshly baked and piping hot, and not to mention quite cheap (3,000W for a small bag), there is not much to fault here.
_1250728
Do take care when you bite into it though – the custard filling is HOT!
_1250753
Maximum anticipation… Myeong Dong! Farewell, money :'(
_1260051
Some food to fuel the high intensity cardio that’s about to happen (shopping)…
_1260025
Hotteok – a brown sugar filled pancake, topped with pine nuts and sesame. Hot from the griddle, it has a slightly crispy exterior with soft and gooey innards. So perfect for this weather.
_1260423
Grilled octopus
_1260431
Topped with dried bonito, takoyaki sauce, and kewpie mayo. Octopus itself is very tough but flavors are very nice and full of umami.

_1260417
Tteokbokki everywhere
_1260410
Bindaetteok (mungbean pancakes) in the making
_1250741
The infamous egg bread!
_1250742
SAH KEEN TO EAT 😛
_1250780
Essentially a hard boiled egg encased in a slightly sweet, fluffy, cake-like bread. Can only imagine how perfect this would be if the yolk was still runny!
_1260386
I had no idea what these were called but the aroma of these little cakes being cooked filled the streets and I just knew I had to buy some 😛 I later found out that these are called hodugwaja and are little cakes filled with red bean paste and walnuts. There is also another variety that is peanut-shaped, each filled with half a peanut.
_1250782
Macaron ice cream sandwich? Yes please!
_1250786
Nevermind that it’s -10 degrees outside… #yolo (Just to give you an idea of how cold it was: we actually took this back to our hotel; it was a 15 minute walk, with a stop-over at the convenience store for water. This thing made it back intact without melting even a teeny bit).
_1260093
Right before it started snowing!

Not sure if santa or spiderman

Fat kitty y u so kootee
_1260008
Teddy cafe! A beary cute place to chill out (or should I say warm up) 😀
_1260018
Santa teddy, so hurry down the chimney tonight
_1250994
Chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream. Even that scoop of ice cream is teddy-themed!! Asians and their cute food ahhhh *insert heart eyes emoji*
_1250758
Myeongdong Gyoja
_1250760
Steamed dumplings filled with minced pork, leek, vegetables and sesame oil. My kinda comfort food 😛
_1250759
Noodles with mince and dumplings in condensed chicken broth
_1260388
Egg bread again because I’m an addict.. This particular one was cheaper (1,000W compared to 2,000W) but for a good reason.. Egg was way overcooked and the cakey part simply didn’t taste as nice as the other one.
_1250978
O’sulloc Tea House – a popular chain cafe that specializes in matcha here. The ice cream, unfortunately, was below par. Flavor was alright but texture was far too icy.
_1250982
Luckily the matcha roll cake made up for it! Sponge cake was light and fluffy and the filling was not overly sweet.
_1250987
Mid-devouration
_1260115
Obligatory Korean BBQ – This restaurant uses kurobuta pork and it’s definitely better than the other random place we wandered into.
_1260123
Mmmmm #juicy

Annnd that’s it for now! Thank you for reading and stay tuned for part II which will be about my meal at Jungsik!
